Breanna, A Mother’s Walk

As a follow up to our Birth Mother’s Day blog post, we introduce you to Breanna, one of our birth mothers who chose an open adoption for her daughter in 2017:

“I found ABI at 3 a.m. after making the hardest decision of my life. I was an emotional wreck and was living through a very dark time. I was the mother of a 9-year-old, 7 months pregnant, and living in a very unhealthy hostile environment with a man I feared, no support system or family of my own. I was terrified and frantically searching for… Something. I knew I had to make a serious change to better not only my life but my daughter and unborn child’s life as well.

I started searching for adoption agencies. After searching all the local ones, ABI stood out to me. It felt safe. I looked at that website probably 50 times a day over the next week before I had the courage to message them.

Stephanie almost immediately responded to my message even though it was the wee hours of the morning. Even through email I could sense her caring and loving personality and when we met, she instantly wrapped her arms around me and gave me one of the best hugs I’ve ever had. We sat in her office talking for hours.

While we played the waiting game for the baby to arrive ABI helped me leave the abusive environment I was in, and they were ALWAYS available for any issue or insecurities I had. Never once did I feel pressured, I was constantly reassured that I was in complete control of the situation and could change the outcome at any time. I was also offered counseling, not only for myself but for my 9-year-old daughter as well. I had a support system like no other through ABI.

When the day finally came Stephanie drove 2 hours to take me to the hospital. She stayed by my side every moment and made sure I had everything I needed or wanted. She held my hand and kissed my forehead and reassured me that whatever I decided she would still be here to support me. She single handedly made the hardest day of my life bearable and for that I will forever be grateful.

Looking back now that seems like a lifetime ago. As I sit here with my 13-year-old daughter wrapping birthday presents for her little sister, I cannot help but feel overcome with emotions. I never would have thought that email at 3 am on a random Thursday would change my life so much for the better. I have completely changed the trajectory of my life thanks to the love and support I had and continue to have through ABI. I am no longer living in fear in a hostile environment. I have chased dreams I never thought I could. I’ve traveled across the country and back. Due to my open adoption plan and youngest daughter’s amazing adoptive family, I have a great relationship with BOTH of my daughters. I have an amazing job.  I’ve been in therapy to improve my mental health. And most recently I’ve found love with someone who thinks I hung the moon. I never thought I could do or have any of those things. And honestly without ABI I would not. I still stay in communication with ABI and consider Stephanie to be a part of the family at this point. She is still my biggest cheerleader and I feel so blessed to have her in my life. I do not even want to imagine how my life would have turned out had I not met ABI. I will forever be grateful for all the love, support, and compassion they showed and continue to show me. Both my girls and I have better lives because of ABI.”
